Transmigration

2008

Mixed-media: soapstone, cedar, copper, turquoise, beeswax

18  x 36 x 8 inches

“This is the first of what I intend to eventually be a mixed-media series focused around the Tibetan Buddhist concept of the Bardo - the movement of souls through the many realms of existence. This sculptural being is both form and artifact. It is representational of the transmigrating soul on the ocean of existence. It is winged and the arms are the very sails that determine a destination. Inscribed in Tibetan calligraphy on the sails are scripture from the 8th century "Tibetan book of the Dead" describing the experience of the soul open leaving the body after death.”
